Split Peas - The inner part of the pea which is split in half, and which is available in green and yellow varieties. Split peas cook quickly and become very soft, so are mostly used for soups.

Stew: Long, slow cooking in a small amount of liquid to produce a dish like a very thick soup. Tough meats are softened by stewing, and vegetables melt down to become deliciously tender.
